Sourdough Starter

I just had to post really quickly about my sourdough starter. I know, I know, everyone is all about sourdough starter right now. Food insecurity will do strange things to people who have the time and resources — or perhaps (like in my case) it is just BOREDOM!

Anyway, her name is Polly PureBread. Full disclosure, I just used plain flour and she came together fine (the recipe above is just fancy with it’s “whole wheat flour” — which I had in the house…why didn’t I use it? I could have been fancy! Dang it!).

Here she is in her infancy:

Four and water mixed together at the bottom of a glass jar.

Here she is coming into her own:

A jar sits on a counter, it is filled with a pale mixture and covered by a large white tea towel which has been made into pigtails on either side of the jar.
Look at her, all growed up!

And then she bloomed into the most amazing loaf of bread — next time, though, we cook her in cast iron!

A loaf of bread fresh out of the bread maker, one piece is cut showing the lovely inside. Behind it is a mess that includes alcohol -- don't judge. :)

I had so much fun with this, I can’t wait to bake more!
