A Perfect Flop!

Sometimes you do it all right, and it is still wrong…

A very flat chocolate souffle with the crust cracked and a spoon sitting in it.

As you know, I’m not the perfect home cook…the Great British Bake Off wouldn’t want me, trust me!  BUT I still try those recipes that everyone thinks of as iconic and difficult, because OMG why not?  Life is short and I might be able to pull it off!

So, I tried  chocolate soufflé.

Sugar, vanilla, and a bowl of mleted chocolate sit in front of a baking dish.A closeup of chocolate souffle batter in a white baking dish.

It sort of worked.

But it sorta didn’t.

I used this recipe from Epicurious: https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/chocolate-souffle-106173

The egg yolks and whites were warm – and I whipped the whites:

Egg whites are being whipped in a red Kitchenaid stand mixer.     A baking dish is filled with chocolate souffle batter sits next to an empty mixing bowl with chocolate streaks still in it.

I didn’t open the oven, but it still came out a little flat.

A very flat chocolate souffle. So sad.

It just goes to show you – in cooking, if you do everything perfectly you can still have a flop on your hands.  Cooking is only part chemistry – the rest is alchemy and magic and luck.

Oh well, I’ll try it again and I’ll let you know how it comes out!
