I’m bacccccck!
I’ve been gone for a while (like almost a year, omg!) — but I spent my time getting ready for this coming year.
The year of mom.
You may not know, but my mom died late 2018 — she was a good cook (she and I both suck at pie crust, but everyone has a weakness) and was the daughter of a good cook. As a child I had the run of the kitchen — if I wanted to try to make something, I would make it. Cakes, cookies, bars, breads, and candy…but no pies!
I’m not sure I’d have the same patience with a kid trashing my kitchen and not doing the dishes. I will say that I learned not to fear the kitchen that way, and to this day if I want to try something I just do it. That’s how I perfected my meringue and it will help me perfect caramel (my current nemesis).
When she died, my beloved brother took all my mom’s handwritten recipes and copied them — one set for him, one for my sister, and one for me. But what to do with them? Put them in a folder and bring them out once in a while? I couldn’t do that. So, I’ve decided to cook all the recipes he gave me — all 232, plus the extras I got from her over the years.
So this year is a love letter to my mom.
But the joke’s on me.
The recipes aren’t perfect. Some are missing titles, some are duplicates that don’t match, some are missing instructions or amounts. There is even one that makes a MASSIVE amount of punch, and one that has every ingredient and instruction EXCEPT the oven temp! *face palm*
I love you mom, but you’ve set me a challenge. Here’s hoping I can figure it out, because if I can’t I’m posting it anyway! Flop or success it is all going up.
Wish me luck, y’all — and tune in every week for the fun and excitement.
